China crowned Women's Team Champions for a record breaking 21st time at #ITTFWorlds2018

2018/05/12, Saturday

The main event of the day came in the Women’s Championship Division as China and Japan went head-to-head at the final hurdle of the title race.

Seeded first for the 2018 competition and aiming to defending their crown, understandably the China squad entered the tie as favourites for the win but in a breathtaking start to the match it was Japan who struck first as Liu Shiwen suffered a surprise five games defeat at the hands of Mima Ito (9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 10-12).

Looking for a quick response China neutralised the score deficit through Ding Ning, who saw off Miu Hirano without dropping a game (11-6, 12-10, 13-11) and not long after the advantage was in China’s court with Zhu Yuling proving too strong for Kasumi Ishikawa (11-4, 11-7, 11-8). Avenging her early defeat, Liu Shiwen put in a strong showing against Miu Hirano (11-6, 11-6, 12-10) to see China lift the trophy for a fourth consecutive occasion.

the Unified Korea side took to the stage for the first time since in 27 years

A significant moment in table tennis history as the Unified Korea side took to the stage for the first time since in 27 years, but the team’s ambitions of making the final were dashed by second seeds Japan in the penultimate round of the 2018 event.

Mima Ito handed Japan the perfect start to the tie with a straight games victory over Jeon Jihee (11-2, 11-8, 11-9) before Kasumi Ishikawa doubled the advantage, defeating Kim Song I in an emotional seven game thriller (11-4, 6-11, 11-8, 11-13, 16-14). Stepping up to compete the job was Miu Hirano, who accounted for Yang Haeun (11-4, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6) to send Japan through to the gold medal match.

The Chinese Men’s Team are the 2018 Men’s Team World Champions after a comprehensive victory over Germany in the Liebherr 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships which concluded today, 6 May 2018 in Halmstad, Sweden.

This was the 21st time that the Chinese men’s team lifted the Swaythling Cup, and it matches the Chinese women’s team’s achievement from yesterday.

The defending Champion faced long-time rivals, European Champion Germany in the final battle for Gold. A bombshell was dropped by Germany one hour before the match started, with the number one seeds leaving the world #3 Dimitrij OVTCHAROV out of the team due his poor condition due to injury.

In the opening match, reigning World Champion MA Long was in domineering form, sweeping table tennis legend Timo BOLL  3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 11-3) to give the Chinese team a 1-0 lead.

Newly crowned world number one FAN Zhendong fresh from his first Asian Cup victory just last month in Yokohama, Japan, continued his top form against Ruwen FILUS to win 11-4, 11-5, 11-4 to help China establish a comfortable 2-0 lead.

XU Xin finished the job for China against Patrick FRANZISKA 3-1 (9-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-5) to put a stamp on the Chinese dominance and close out the championships.
