Lucie
Safarova waved farewell to the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore
presented by SC Global in style with an impressive victory over
Angelique Kerber in Friday, 30 October.
"That's
teamwork," Safarova said. "I am happy for Petra that she
went through to the semis and I am happy for my win today as well."
Safarova, who had played well in losing efforts in her opening two
round robin outings, got off to the perfect start against
Kerber, breaking twice in the first three games.
Kerber, on the other hand, appeared to struggle with the occasion,
never threatening to close the gap as the Czech calmly closed out the
set.
"I was not feeling good. From the first point I couldn't find
my rhythm. I was actually not there," Kerber said. "I was
tight and I was not playing my tennis. Lucie played a good match for
sure, but for sure it was not my best match today."
When Kerber dumped a forehand halfway up the net to surrender her
serve in the third game of the second, Safarova's stranglehold on the
match tightened further. The only slight wobble came in the
final game, Safarova spurning three match points before finally
closing out victory at the fourth time of asking when the German sent
a tired forehand wide.
