行政長官曾蔭權今天（7月18日）主持香港奧運徑及奧運林揭幕儀式時表示，設立奧運徑和奧運林，切合北京綠色奧運的主題，可向市民提倡綠色生活，灌輸環保意識。
為了標誌北京奧運，以及香港協辦奧運馬術比賽，特區政府獲得國際奧林匹克委員會的批准，把大嶼山白芒村至梅窩的1段山徑，命名為「香港奧運徑」，以及把白芒村附近山坡的部分植林，命名為「奧運林」。
奧運徑連接白芒及梅窩，全長約5.6公里，最高點227米，途經多條超過200年歷史的鄉村，適合家庭郊遊及遠足。起點白芒村的門樓、圍牆、宗祠及更樓，已被列為法定古蹟。
