「國泰航空/滙豐香港國際七人欖球賽2012」一連三日共61場賽事於傍晚圓滿結束。包括2005及1997年的欖球世界盃，曾12度於香港封王的斐濟擊敗巡迴賽冠軍新西蘭，再一次在香港這塊福地高舉銀盃殊榮，成為「種籽組」冠軍。

新西蘭軍今年的於巡迴賽表現反覆，迪拜站一役連負於南非、英格蘭及澳洲；隨後卻在緊接的南非及主場掄元；加上十二人大軍中有不少球員未曾參與香港賽事。相反，一向流於躁進的斐濟今季巡迴賽發揮卻相對穩定，以至這隊只在澳洲站摘冠的球隊，能在五站賽事後在積分榜只落後新西蘭五分。

兩隊在今季巡迴賽事中，曾兩度交手，成績分別是一勝一負，不分軒輊。新西蘭擊敗威爾斯及南非晉級。斐濟亦在淘汰賽中戰勝阿根廷及英格蘭挺進決賽。

雙方在開賽初段均採取強行突破，打出節奏明快的賽事，擒抱的畫面比比皆是。斐濟的拿也奇里胡(Waisea Nayacalevu)在中路接應隊友輸送後趁對手未及回防，跑過半場快速達陣為賽事先開紀錄。隨後，斐濟再一次藉速度上的優勢，成功利用直線踢球過人達陣把比數進一步拉開至12比0；之後新西蘭積文(Mark Jackman)連續達陣兩次，上半場追至14比14平手。

下半場開始後，斐濟開始主導球賽，多番以單對單擒抱破壞對方進攻，分別由隊長加高(Setefano Cakau)、拿也奇里胡及馬達華勞(Nikola Matawalu)先後三次建功取得21分，最終以35比28擊敗新西蘭封王，把兩者在巡迴賽積分榜上的差距拉近。

賽後斐濟教練戴禾(Alavereti Dere)對於初次領軍香港站即奪冠感到極度高興，他在職業生涯中亦曾以球員身份在香港取得冠軍。他表示，球隊在賽事最後十分鐘表現出強烈爭勝決心，是致勝關鍵。
